Silica Gel

Silica gel is the most recognized desiccant, consisting of porous silicon dioxide. It works through adsorption, meaning moisture sticks to the surface of the pores rather than being absorbed into the body of the gel.

  • Key Features: Remains dry to the touch even when saturated; chemically inert; available in “indicating” versions (which change color when full).

  • Best For: Electronics, pharmaceuticals, leather goods, and camera equipment.

  • Limitation: It is most effective in airtight, closed environments. It has a limited capacity compared to calcium chloride-based desiccants.

Super Dry

“Super Dry” refers to high-capacity desiccants typically made from Calcium Chloride. Unlike silica gel, these desiccants can absorb up to 300% of their own weight in moisture.

  • Key Features: Turns moisture into a leak-proof gel; significantly more powerful than silica gel; ideal for high-humidity environments.

  • Best For: Ocean freight containers, bulk textiles, and furniture where “container rain” (condensation) is a major risk.

  • Limitation: Because it turns to gel, it must be packaged in high-quality, leak-proof materials to prevent the brine from damaging products.

Micro-Pak (Anti-Mold Stickers & Sheets)

Micro-Pak is not a traditional desiccant; it is an anti-microbial solution. While desiccants remove moisture to prevent mold, Micro-Pak works by releasing an atmosphere that actively eliminates mold spores.

  • Key Features: Activated by humidity; small and easy to place in shoe boxes or polybags; chemically engineered to target fungal growth.

  • Best For: Footwear, apparel, and accessories.

  • Limitation: It does not “dry out” the air; it focuses specifically on preventing mold and odors.

Tissue

Desiccant paper or tissue is a thin, flexible sheet impregnated with silica gel or molecular sieve. It provides a way to integrate moisture protection directly into the packaging layer.

  • Key Features: Space-saving; non-obtrusive; can act as both a wrapping material and a drying agent.

  • Best For: Delicate jewelry, small metal components (to prevent tarnish), and thin electronic components where a bulky packet won’t fit.

  • Limitation: Lower total moisture capacity due to its thin profile.
